The days of showing up at a cruise line dock hoping to negotiate your way on board have gone, now that cruise lines are obligated to submit passenger manifests within a day or two of departure. However, this does not mean that you cannot take advantage of some great last minute cruises.  

There is a large gap of time when it comes to cruising that still allows for a cruise to be considered as being last-minute. Any departure that is from one day to three months ahead can be considered a last-minute cruise. This is great news for those who live for spontaneity or are unable to book a cruise half a year in advance.  

With the evolution of the internet has come the ability for potential cruise passengers to shop around and find possibly great deals for themselves. Travel agents are also a useful source when it comes to finding attractive cruise deals. They are constantly in the loop with new information on cruise lines that are trying to fill their ships.

If you find a great cruise deal on a ship that is offering a longer amount of time between departure dates, you should have no problem booking a great deal on your flight as well. Most ships offer last-minute rates 60 to 90 days before their departure, allowing ample time to book a flight. 

Most cruise ship deals are booked within a week or two of the sailing date. These are available at reduced prices of often 15 to 50 per cent; to fill the ships unsold cabins. You may not get the cabin category that you were hoping for but that is part of getting in on a last-minute cruise deal.

There are many reasons why cruises make the perfect holiday. For one, they are very affordable. If you were to compare apples to apples-a cruise holiday to any other kind of land based holiday-there is no way you would be able to get the same value for the price you pay for a cruise. Even in today’s modern world, those with disabilities sometimes face difficulties in all areas of their lives. However, today’s cruise lines have made great strides in providing services for the disabled.

Cruise lines have retro fitted some of the older ships with wider corridors, grab bars in the bathrooms and lower thresholds. Some ships include Braille elevator buttons for the blind and ADA kits for the hearing impaired. Some ships will allow a Seeing Eye guide dog, although getting the necessary permits and health records can hinder bringing a dog onboard. However, most cruise lines require that a disabled person have a personal companion.

Newer ships have built-in facilities for the disabled and common rooms are accessible by wheelchair, walker or cane. Some of the cruise lines have special cabins designated for the disabled.

While few ships score 100% in disability services, Royal Caribbean has seven ships that provide accommodation specifically for the disabled. The Freedom, the Independence and the Liberty provide living spaces for over 30 disabled passengers, while the Brilliance, the Jewel of the Seas, the Radiance and the Serenade each have slightly less spaces.

Princess Cruises offer Braille elevator buttons, ADA kits, and wheelchair accessible cabins, suites and staterooms on the Crown Princess, the Ruby Princess and the Emerald Princess.

The degree of disability is always a factor, and some passengers will have greater mobility than others. For those who prefer to travel with others who share their disability, some cruise lines offer chartered cruises for the elderly, dialysis patients, the hearing impaired, the visually impaired, those in wheelchairs and others tailored to a specific disability.
