A San Diego holiday

San Diego, California, is a beautiful city to visit on holiday. Whether travelling alone, as a family or with a group of friends, you will find plenty to do in San Diego.

Anyone who enjoys seeing wild animals will want to take time to visit the San Diego Zoo and Walt Disney’s Wild Animal Park. San Diego Zoo is regarded as one of the best, not only in the United States, but also in the world. Hundreds of different species of animals can be seen at this remarkable zoo. Walt Disney’s Wild Animal Park follows the concept of the zoo by housing its animals in man-made habitats that are as similar to the wild as possible.

The beaches in San Diego are stunning, offering visitors who enjoy the outdoors a wonderful opportunity to tan in the sun, build a sandcastle, swim in the Pacific Ocean and go surfing and boogie boarding. If you travel during the winter it will be too cold to comfortably enjoy the water, but do not let that stop you from enjoying the beach and strolling along the boardwalk. Many of the shops and boutiques on the boardwalk remain open, even during the winter, providing a great opportunity for a little retail therapy.

Spending the day exploring San Diego is sure to make you hungry, so it is fortunate that there are lots of great restaurants to check out in the downtown area of the city. Regardless of what type of food you enjoy, you are sure to find something to suit your taste.

Visitors to the Spanish region of Catalonia should include a trip to Tarragona as part of their holiday.  Barcelona may be the capital and most famous city in Catalonia, but Tarragona has just as much to offer, particularly for those interested in history.

Tarragona is a coastal town to the south of Barcelona, and travelling by train takes around one hour and 15 minutes, with a similar journey time by car.  Like its northern neighbour, there is no shortage of hotels and restaurants to suit most pockets, and both have well-maintained beaches, making them popular summer destinations.  There is also a wealth of historical landmarks, and Tarragona, in particular, is ideal for short breaks as most of the attractions can be found in the historic old town.  With a population of around 140,000, the city has an intimate, relaxed atmosphere.

Perhaps the most impressive attraction in Tarragona is the Roman ruins.  The Romans called the city Tarraco, and the buildings that have survived now form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Highlights include the amphitheatre, the Praetorium tower and adjoining circus, two forums or plazas, and the city walls.  All are within easy walking distance of each other with excellent information points.  There are several more Roman sites nearby including Les Ferreres Aqueduct, a famous aqueduct known as Devil’s Bridge.

Tarragona Cathedral sits at the top of the old town, while the Museum of Modern Art and the Casa Castellarnau Museum, a famous nobleman’s residence from the Middle Ages, are also nearby.  At the centre of the old town is the main square, Plaça de la Font, with a wide selection of restaurants, while a stroll along the Rambla Nova leads to Balcó del Mediterrani, a wrought iron balcony with a commanding view of the Mediterranean below.

With numerous culture activities and festivals, from re-enactments of gladiatorial games to open-air concerts, there is no shortage of things to do in Tarragona.

A Grand Canyon Holiday

People travel from around the globe to visit the Grand Canyon and if you enjoy the outdoors, you are sure to enjoy a holiday here. Flowing through this stunning canyon is the Colorado River and a huge number of people choose to spend their holiday hiking down to it. They usually camp near the river or stay at the Phantom Ranch, spend some time exploring and then hike back out. Others prefer to ride a donkey up and down the canyon, which is somewhat easier than hiking the whole way. If neither option sounds appealing to you, you may prefer to simply view the canyon from the rim, without descending into it.

If you do decide to stay at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, there is the Phantom Ranch, which also has a restaurant. You should be aware that the ranch is extremely busy and if you do wish to stay there you will need to make a reservation up to a year in advance of your visit. Bookings can be made by visiting the Grand Canyon accommodation website.

Camel safaris in Egypt

Camel riding tours are a fun and exciting way to see the historical sights of Egypt.  Most of the camel guides in Egypt are Bedouin.  This tribe actually lives in the desert.  As a visitor rides through the desert area on their camel they will have the chance of experiencing the history and culture of the Bedouins and of Egypt.

Many different kinds of camel rides are offered when embarking on cheap holidays to Egypt.  These will vary from camel trekking through Sharm El Sheikh and also the more adventurous off-road treks.  Setting off from Sharm El Sheikh, the visitor will trek into the desert and also visit a Bedouin camp to experience the way this tribe lives.  Visitors might even share some herbal tea with the Bedouin natives.  They will also see the beauty of the setting sun while in the desert.  This can be quite an unforgettable experience.

Camel safaris can be enjoyed in the high mountainous ranges of the Southern Sinai region that passes between the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba.  This area cannot be seen if travelling by car or vehicle.  This only makes the camel safari even more special.  The Bedouins conducting these tours always look out for any new route and love to show off the incredible scenery that this area offers.

When planning a camel safari, it will be necessary to be prepared for any kind of weather.  This can range from freezing temperatures during the night to sunshine drenched heat waves in the daytime.   Direct flights to Sharm El Sheikh depart from various UK airports that include: London Gatwick, Bristol, Belfast and Manchester.

The Maldives may be a wonderfully small island country, but it invokes strong feelings of national patriotism and has a strong religious community.  Planning Maldives holidays during festivals – when the local population has a chance to come together and share the same enthusiasm or ties – is a fantastic way to explore Maldivian local culture.

Some significant times to visit the Maldives include:

Republic Day of Maldives

On November 11, the islands celebrate with dances and marches, with children and neighbours.  A collection of lively special events are performed each year to mark the freedom of the republic.

Independence Day

Celebrating independence from the British on July 26, Maldivians welcome the event with pomp and gaiety, including music, dance and jazz performances.

Maldivians also celebrate religious holidays with as much fervour as national ones.  Religious holidays are times of solemnity and respect, and days of observance or celebration among the Maldivian people.  Holidays are scheduled based on the lunar calendar.  Some of the Islamic celebrations that the nation commemorates include Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and the month when the Qu’ran was revealed, and Eid-ul-Fitr, the end of Ramadan fasting.  Other holidays include Eid-Ul-Adha, one of the major religious celebrations of the Maldives.

Child Care and the Maldives

Family holidays are a time for bonding through engaging in different activities together.  With resorts dotted around the 1,190 low lying coral islands of the Maldives, educational fun will certainly be catered for.  Soaking up the sunshine on Maldives holidays and enjoying the pearly white beaches can make all of the anxiety and daily stresses seem unimportant, especially when laughter and exploration are the order of the day.

Most couples are unable to find time to be alone, especially when they are on holiday with children.  This can often leave them feeling less rejuvenated, as the holiday seems tailored around their children’s needs.

The Maldives is an inspiring destination for couples to spend essential quality time together, and finding this time can make all the difference as you are able to reconnect as a couple and bask in the beauty of your surroundings as well as in each other’s company.  That said, the problem is often being able to find a professional child minding service that can give you peace of mind, leaving you to enjoy the precious time you have together.

Maldives holidays offer you the option of using child-minding services on the different islands.  This way, you know that your children are in safe hands and you are then able to have some time to yourselves.  Your children will not be left to simply sit and waste the day away.  Instead, they too will be able to take in some of the activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and other water sports for which the island is renowned.

Ho Chi Minh City is the jumping off point for a visit to the Mekong Delta – a river that meanders through seven countries before it splits into multiple tributaries in Vietnam.

Once in the area, trips from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta can be easily arranged by hotels or tour shops.  These can be as short as one day, or, for a more comprehensive look at this fascinating area allow three days instead.  On the longer trip you will be rewarded with richer, broader experiences.

Vendors still sell their fruit and vegetable crops off boats on the river and these markets are endlessly fascinating, crazy, and frenetic.  Activity is particularly engaging early in the morning, as tourist boats vie with each other for the best position to see old wooden boats jam-packed with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Wares are advertised in a unique fashion.  Boat owners have a bamboo pole tied to the bow of the boat with a sample of the produce.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are quickly trimmed on board the boats to get ready for sale.

On a one day trip it is possible to see the floating village of Cai Be, although a two night trip will take visitors to see the larger and more amazing floating market of Cai Rang.

Along with the markets on the Mekong Delta, tours may also visit a fishing village to see fish farming, the minority Moslem village and a couple of towns on the edge of the river.  Ben Tre and the Coconut Factory are famous for its delicious coconut sweets.  Visitors are encouraged to sample the goodies on offer and then make a purchase.

Another activity often included in the trips is a cruise along the narrow waterways to see the daily activities of the locals close up.  An easy way to see this area is by taking a tour that can be purchased upon arrival.

Cruises have become more affordable and popular than ever before.  Most likely, you have friends or co-workers who have been on cruise holidays, and this has you thinking about whether or not you should book your own cruise holiday.

You should be aware that there are different types of cruise holidays available.  Some have themes such as whale watching in Alaska whilst others will take you on a journey to taste the various wines of certain countries.

Some cruise lines also provide cruises for certain age groups such as singles and seniors. If you are planning to take your trip with children, then make certain in advance that your cruise line allows this. Many companies have cruises that are classified adult-only.  This is mainly because the other passengers may not want to have children around.

Pricing will be a concern when booking any cruise holidays.  You can look at the website of the cruise line itself or use a travel agent who will find the cheapest prices for you.  Sometimes it is cheaper to not book through the cruise line – a good agent can advise you on this.

When choosing which cruise to go on, take a good look at the ship’s itinerary so that you can see exactly where your cruise will take you.  You may wish to consider far east cruises or going to places such as Norway that are inaccessible by any other mode of transportation.

If you have decided upon booking your first cruise holiday, then take the plunge and start hunting for that perfect place to visit.  You will not be disappointed.

The traditional way to see the land of Egypt was by travelling down the Nile River in a slow-moving boat powered by sails or men.  Queen Cleopatra herself is known to have voyaged this way to see her vast domain.  These days, motors have generally replaced the sails and rowers, but river cruises up the length of the Nile remain a wonderful way to experience the ancient “land of the Pharaohs.”

Benefits of the Cruise Experience

Travelling abroad can be a daunting and hectic experience, but it does not have to be.   A traditional tour or holiday you organize for yourself is most likely includes a series of hotels in various cities you would like to visit.  Every time you have exhausted the attractions in one area, you must pack up all your belongings and find your way to the airport or bus station in order to continue your journey to the next stopping point, where you will unpack and begin the process all over again.

A cruise holiday is entirely different.  Because your ‘hotel’ is itself a moving entity, you can settle down into one cabin or stateroom for the duration, knowing that you will only need to unpack your belongings once.  Rather than wasting valuable holiday time figuring out how to use public transport or waiting in airport lounges, you can enjoy a cool drink on deck whilst the land of Egypt on both banks amazes you with sights never before imagined.

Madeira is a Portuguese island that is known for dramatic scenery, a lovely year-round climate, and beautiful subtropical flora.  ‘The Floating Island’ as this small, unique island is called by the locals offers fascinating landscapes and a rich natural beauty.  Madeira is a popular stop on both transatlantic and Western Mediterranean cruise itineraries.

Cruise ships stopping at Madeira dock at Funchal, the main port and capital city of the island, and most cruise lines will provide a shuttle to the town centre.  Funchal is a charming old town that has a distinctly colonial feel to it, and offers excellent opportunities for shopping, strolling, dining, and visiting museums and tropical gardens.  There are also a number of scenic hiking trails found in and around the city.

The coastline of Madeira is dramatic and rugged, and the beaches found on the island range from volcanic black sand to shingle and pebble beaches; visitors can relax at the many bathing complexes and lidos found here.  Other activities to enjoy include a boat trip to Porto Santos, an island with a lovely and inviting sandy beach, or a cable car ride to Monte, an historical old town.

The cuisine found on Madeira, not surprisingly, has a heavy Portuguese influence; specialities include beef kebabs and all kinds of seafood, as well as honey soaked pastries and cakes that include the famous and delicious Madeira cake.  Visitors should try and sample the sweet wines that are produced on Madeira, and tastings can be arranged at the numerous wine lodges that are located around the island.

A trip to Madeira also offers travellers the opportunity to check out the unique local handicrafts and folk art, wicker goods, exotic flowers, and embroidery work at the shops in and around Funchal.

Other ports that are visited on cruises that stop at Madeira may include Tangiers, Casablanca, Lisbon, Tenerife, and Barcelona.  The ports of call will vary depending on the individual cruise.
