Flights to holiday destinations outside Europe can be expensive. However, this does not necessarily restrict the options for cheap holidays to short-haul destinations. Far away holidays can still be cheap, it is simply a matter of knowing where to look and a cheap long-haul flight can make a holiday in Thailand much more affordable.
To find a bargain flight book well in advance and avoid busy periods, such as school holidays. Flying is cheaper on weekdays rather than at weekends and the time of the flight also affects the price; for example, flights after midnight, midweek, can be substantially cheaper than those on a Saturday afternoon. Many airlines have sales at the end of winter, although to take advantage of these it is necessary to fly during February or March.
When times are hard airlines have to compete to attract passengers and as a result they tend to offer price reductions of as much as 20 per cent. To be sure of finding these offers it is a good idea to register for email alerts from the preferred travel company.
New York is a great destination and the cheapest times to visit are between January and March and in November; use online sites to search for cheap airfares. Latin America also has some fantastic destinations and by booking early it is possible to make substantial savings. The choice of destination will also affect the price; the most expensive destination is usually Santiago, in Chile and flights are generally most expensive between July and August and in December.
Flights to Australia and New Zealand are generally cheapest between May and June, but there are some very competitive rates to be found at other times of the year. Try to avoid the peak times of December and January and instead aim for September or November. For New Zealand, taking a more indirect route can also save money.
The cheapest time to travel to Asia is during the hot season, between April and June. December and November are peak season.
